Your hearing aids allow you to easily engage in conversation, listen to music clearly, and even pick up on potential threats like the sound of an approaching car. These devices are integral to everyday happiness and health. Don’t let them give out on you, especially when you’re on vacation and might not be able to find a repair technician immediately. Here’s how to protect them on the go.

Checklist for Hearing Aid Maintenance While Traveling

1. Store Them Properly

Bring a storage case for your hearing aids, as well as an extra battery or charger. Keep everything in a small bag that’s always by your side. If you’re driving, ensure it’s in the glove box, not in the trunk of the car. If you’re flying, keep it in your carry-on, not the checked bag.

2. Don’t Get Them Wet

hearing aidsHearing aids are electronic devices, and getting them wet will damage them. Always take them out when going for a swim in the pool, taking a dip in the ocean, or entering a steam room or sauna. Also, remove them when showering. Keep them in a safe, dry place; don’t leave them on the bathroom counter since the steam from the shower can create a damaging, humid environment.

3. Take Care in Airplanes

Hearing aids aren’t subject to airline regulations requiring electronics to be turned off during takeoff and landing. You can keep them switched on throughout the flight. If they have an FM receiver, however, turn this off at these sensitive periods; it may have the same interfering effect a mobile phone would. If you take them out to watch a movie with headphones, put them in your storage container — not the seat pocket.
