Most homeowners are familiar with granite or stone surfaces, but some might be unfamiliar with laminate countertops. This lesser-known material has continued to grow in popularity due to the many benefits it offers. If you’re planning a home renovation, here’s more information about this material and what you need to know.

What’s Laminate?

Laminate countertops are composed of several layers. The top layer is a clear sheet of melamine resin that defends the material below from scratches and water damage. Under the melamine resin are layers of wood aggregate that have been fused with more resin and tightly sealed with strong pressure. One of these underlayers carries the design, which often resembles wood.

What Are the Benefits?

laminate countertopsLaminate countertops can closely mimic most surface aesthetics, like granite or wood, at a fraction of the price since it’s synthetic. This material is also available in several colors, allowing it to seamlessly integrate with any existing home design. Since it’s fabricated, the shape is more versatile than other materials, making it an ideal option for kitchens with nonstandard, asymmetrical dimensions.

Laminate countertops are ideal for families because the outer layer repels spills, making it extremely accident-friendly, especially if there are young kids in the house. This material is a little less resistant to scratching than granite, so it’s not ideal for use as a cutting board, but will hold up fine against everyday wear and tear. These countertops are low-maintenance, so the most you’ll ever have to do is clean them occasionally with soap and water.
