How Does Your Car’s Exhaust System Work?, East Franklin, Pennsylvania

If you’re a first-time car owner, there’s a lot to learn about auto maintenance. While it’s not your responsibility to know how to fix mechanical issues that may arise, being able to recognize when you need an auto mechanic for exhaust repairs and other issues is crucial. Here’s what you need to know about these systems.

A Guide to Car Exhaust Systems

What Is the Function of the Exhaust System?

Your car needs an exhaust to function, as it produces the power that allows the engine to run. The power that fuels your vehicle consists of thousands of tiny explosions that propel the engine. What isn’t used becomes leftover gases, including carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and carbon dioxide. Your car’s exhaust system ensures these contaminants are dispelled away from your vehicle’s cabin (and your body). The other major function of an exhaust system is to reduce the noise of the engine.

How Does It Work?

The exhaust system is made up of various components, each serving a specific function. If there’s an issue with one part, it affects the entire system and keeps it from functioning effectively.

  • Muffler: Mufflers aid in the noise reduction by routing the soundwaves through chambers. They restrict and muffle the amount of noise heard as gases exit. If it becomes rusted or gets a hole, you’ll likely need exhaust repairs.
  • Oxygen Sensors: Oxygen sensors are electronic devices that exist in the exhaust pipe. They detect and measure the amount of oxygen versus exhaust gases and monitor the fuel for efficiency.
  • Exhaust Pipe/Manifold: They extend through the length of the car and connect the engine to the components of the exhaust system. They transfer the gas from cylinder heads to the exhaust pipe.

How Can You Tell If It Needs Repairs?

The exhaust system is one of the hardest working systems in your car, making it an important part of your auto maintenance. Major signals to look for include:

  • The vehicle engine becoming increasingly noisy
  • Poor fuel efficiency
  • Vibrations felt through the steering wheel or pedals, or whole-car shaking

Scheduling routine auto maintenance is crucial as a new car owner. Exhaust repairs are not something to put off. The longer you wait, the more dangerous and expensive they’ll become.
