Potholes are relatively common on the roads in Nebraska. The harsh winters are mostly to blame because snow and ice—not to mention sand and salt—contribute to the rapid deterioration of both asphalt and concrete. And since not all municipalities stay on top of their road maintenance, vehicles damaged by massive potholes are relatively common, too. Here are just a few tire, wheel, and suspension issues that can arise from traveling over bad roads.

3 Ways Potholes Can Hurt Your Car

1. By Blowing Out the Tires

Striking even a small pothole at a high speed can cause a tire blowout if you hit it just right. Bulging sidewalls and minor punctures that result in slow leaks are also common in tires that have traversed one too many potholes. To ensure yours can withstand reasonable wear and tear, keep them filled to the recommended level, and replace them when their treads are less than 4/32 of an inch deep.

2. By Bending the Wheels

tiresDepending on the speed and angle at which the car strikes the uneven surface, the rims could be left dented and the wheels could end up bent. Unfortunately, the only foolproof way to prevent this kind of damage is to avoid potholes in the first place. Always travel at a safe speed and scan your surroundings constantly so you can maneuver around any potential hazards that arise.

3. By Ruining the Alignment

If you hit a pothole hard enough, it could bend one of the vehicle’s steering or suspension components. Because driving a car that’s out of alignment is incredibly dangerous, the problem should be addressed immediately. If your vehicle feels like it’s pulling even a little to the left or right, bring it to the auto repair shop right away—even if you don’t remember running over a pothole.
