All types of fencing materials require some degree of care to maintain their integrity and longevity. While vinyl fences are among the easiest of all materials to keep up, it’s still worth giving them some special attention to protect your investment. Here are three suggestions that will help your fence look its very best.

How to Protect Your Vinyl Fence

1. Rinse It Occasionally

You don’t need to worry about doing much heavy-duty cleaning on your vinyl fence. The material is very forgiving, and aiming a gentle spray from the garden hose directly at the surface is an easy way to remove any debris. If you haven’t cleaned your vinyl fence in years, then it’s worth power washing the material to remove more stubborn dirt and stains.

2. Spot Clean Sections

Whether they’re from grass, gardening chemicals, or an animal, tackle them quickly so that they don’t have a chance to settle into the vinyl. Combine a cup of white vinegar with two gallons of water and apply the mixture directly to the affected areas. Then use a melamine foam sponge to gently scrub the stain away. Avoid using anything that could scour the surface, as this could leave scratches behind or dull the finish.

3. Inspect the Vinyl

Take the time to inspect the vinyl’s condition at least once a year, ideally after winter when visible damage is easy to spot. Assess the shape of the posts and panels, and make sure nothing wobbles when you apply pressure. Sometimes natural freeze-and-thaw cycles can cause posts to loosen if the holes were not dug deeply enough or the concrete was not filled well enough. If you have a vinyl privacy fence with a lattice top, check the lattice more frequently as the connecting rails may come loose over time.
