Alarm Systems FAQ

Will my pet trigger a false alarm?

If you set up the system properly, you can avoid having pets trigger false alarms. The most common false alarms occur from motion sensors that are set in places that animals frequent. By avoiding motion sensors in the areas that your pet moves around, you will eliminate those alarms. Some detectors also can be set to ignore animals under a certain size, so they will trigger when a burglar enters but not when your 20-pound pup walks by.

Can I install an alarm system if I rent?

alarm systemYes — if you rent, then a wireless system is perfect for you. These can be installed in about 30 minutes on average and are completely portable. When the time comes to move, you can take your system and leave no trace behind. Tell your installers that you’re a renter, and they will ensure the installation doesn’t affect your security deposit.

Does the system work during a power outage?

This depends on the type of system you have. Learn how your security system communicates with the monitoring center. If it relies on the internet or VoIP, then it will not work during a power outage unless you have a backup power supply for your internet. Systems that use cellular radio will operate during power outages.

What happens during false alarms?

You will have 30 seconds to disable the false alarm before the alarm company notifies emergency personnel. You can also contact them directly to tell them that help isn’t needed. You should work with the alarm company to prevent false alarms, however, because if too many occur, you may be subject to fines.
