Losing a loved one is a heartbreaking experience and can leave you facing financial hardship. If a spouse or family member passes and was receiving social security benefits, you may qualify for survivor compensation following the funeral. Eligibility varies, and below, you’ll find what you need to know to ensure you receive any financial assistance you’re due.

What Are Social Security Death Benefits?

funeral-porto-funeral-homesThe U.S. Social Security Administration provides four categories of financial assistance to individuals: retirement, disability, survivor benefits, and spouse’s benefits. If a loved one received retirement or disability, it can be a significant source of financial support. Losing this when they pass can create hardships for survivors, which is why the Social Security Administration provides financial assistance. There are two types: a one-time lump sum of $225 or an ongoing monthly payment, known as a survivor benefit.

Who Is Eligible?

The Social Security Administration has strict eligibility criteria for those to receive benefits following a funeral. The spouse of the deceased would qualify for the lump sum, even if they were living apart at the time of the other’s death. If there is no spouse, a dependent child can receive the payment.

Monthly payments are provided for widowers, minor children, and dependents. Children under the age of 18 have to attend high school or middle school full time. If they are disabled before the age of 22, they may also receive benefits. A parent of a deceased worker over the age of 62 may also receive benefits, in addition to widowers caring for a child under the age of 16, or a spouse over 60. If you need assistance determining your eligibility, the Social Security Administration offers a variety of online resources.
