Some boaters prefer hitting the open waters with the breeze in their hair and the water spraying up around them. Others would rather spend a lazy afternoon bobbing on the surface, enjoying the serenity and the sun. Regardless of which you prefer, or if you fall somewhere in between, always follow boating safety precautions. In addition to obtaining boat insurance, below are a few safety tips to help you enjoy your summer on the water.

Safe Summer Boating Advice

1. Don't Drink & Boat

You can be cited for drunk boating just as you can for drunk driving. In most states, including Alabama, the blood alcohol content limit is .08% when operating a boat. Controlling a vessel is much different than controlling a vehicle; the ever-changing conditions of the water, the noise of the engine, and the force of the water's spray are just a few of the factors that make boating tricky. Also, a conviction can come with fines, jail time, and an increase in boat insurance rates.

2. Wear Life Jackets

When shopping for a personal flotation device (PFD), only choose one that’s been approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. Try it on to ensure a proper fit; the PFD should be neither too large nor too small. All states require children to wear life jackets. Instruct everyone onboard how to wear and secure theirs properly. Also, make it a rule that life jackets go on as soon as anyone sets foot in the boat.

3. Perform Regular Inspections

Before you take your boat out, do a thorough inspection to confirm it’s in safe operating condition. Look for holes and cracks that could leak, check the fuel and fluid levels, switch the lights on and off, and test out any onboard radio devices. Keep an oar and fire extinguisher aboard, too. If any issues are present, don’t take unnecessary risks; no matter how minor, get them addressed before hitting the water.
