A storm drain system is an underground network of pipes and open ditches that transports rainfall runoff to nearby streams, rivers, and other natural bodies of water. They are installed on roadways, sidewalks, parking lots, and other high traffic areas to manage flooding from precipitation. Here are four considerations excavators make when designing a system.

What Factors Affect Storm Drain System Design?

1. Location

Whenever possible, drainage pipelines should follow the natural alignment of the water sources they drain to. This promotes adequate drainage and reduces the risk of localized flooding. Excavators need to know general information about the area before installing a storm drain system, like the ground conditions, street width, and whether another drainage system is already in place. The first two factors help determine what structural elements the area can accommodate if a new system is required.

2. Underground Obstructions

Several structures may be hidden beneath the proposed site, and hitting them can result in leaks, fires, or power outages. A preliminary inspection is necessary to identify a variety of underground pipes and utility services, such as oil pipelines, electricity cables, and gas and sewer mains.

3. Surface Barriers

Prior to any construction, the site should be surveyed for barriers like large trees and rocks, buildings, and cell phone towers that may divert water or encourage pooling.

4. Environmental Concerns

While the excavators may need to remove some natural obstacles to establish an effective and safe storm drain system, doing so could affect the environment negatively. When at all possible, excavators should avoid impacting indigenous trees and shrubs along with native grasslands and wetlands that may house endangered or threatened species.
