For people with auditory issues, hearing aids provide a lifeline. If you’ve grown used to enhanced hearing, a high-pitched, whistle-like noise can be jarring and frustrating. While this issue is common, luckily, it can be fixed. Here’s what you need to know.

3 Reasons Your Hearing Aids Are Whistling

1. You’re Not Wearing Them Properly

In some cases, the issue may be the way the aids are positioned in your ears. If you hear whistling, remove them and make sure you didn’t place them in the wrong ears. If this isn’t the problem, re-insert them further inside your ears. If there’s a large gap between your hearing aids and the inside of your ear canal, it could create an echo chamber, leading to high-pitched noises.

2. The Volume Is High

If the dial is set too loud, the hearing aids will pick up the sound they’re creating, resulting in whistling noises. To fix the issue, turn down the volume and make a mental note to keep the volume lower.

3. You Have Earwax

If you don’t clean your ears often, the whistling may be due to built-up wax that’s blocking the ear canal. This stubborn substance will prevent sound waves from passing, deflecting them back into your hearing aids and creating a feedback loop. As a result, you may develop an earache—both because of the blockage and the whistling. Additionally, the wax can damage the devices.
