Weddings are magical – and heavily photographed – occasions. Many brides and grooms want to look their best for this special day. Teeth whitening is often an important part of ensuring you look as joyful and confident as you feel when exchanging vows. The guide below explains how to achieve a truly radiant smile for the event.

How to Keep Your Smile Bright

While teeth whitening can work wonders, there’s no substitute for proper oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice daily, floss every evening, and visit your dentist for professional cleanings every six months while you plan for your wedding. For even better results, rinse with mouthwash after meals, chew sugarless gum, or increase your brushing and flossing frequency. Cut back on enamel-harming foods and beverages, like sugary juices and sodas, acidic coffee and tomato-based sauces or salsas, sticky or hard candies, richly colored berries, and tannic red wine. If you do indulge, rinse immediately afterward. You can also use a straw to sip drinks, as this will lessen direct contact with your teeth.

What Laser Whitening Can Do

teeth whiteningEven with proper care at home, teeth can sometimes become discolored or unevenly toned. In these cases, laser teeth whitening may be a solution. In this procedure, your dentist will apply a strong hydrogen peroxide gel to each off-shade tooth. They’ll then use a safe level of laser-generated heat to promote chemical bonding and speed the process. Depending upon the degree of discoloration, you may need multiple appointments to reach your desired brightness, so schedule appointments several weeks before the big day. You’ll need a dental exam beforehand to determine if you’re a suitable candidate for the process, as individuals with gum disease, fillings, or extreme sensitivity may not be eligible. Still, for most patients, the process can be extremely effective, in some cases resulting in improvements of nine or more shades
