While you might leave the work to your mechanic, all drivers should know the most important parts in their vehicles. Understanding what they do, what they look like, and how to maintain them will help you stay safe in a reliable vehicle. Familiarize yourself with the car parts below.

Car Parts to Know About

1. Brakes

The brake system’s major parts are the calipers, rotors, and pads.  When you push down on the brake pedal, a piston pushes hydraulic fluid down the line to the calipers of each wheel. The caliper presses the brake rotor against the pad, which generates the friction that causes you to stop. Brake pads generally last about 50,000 miles, though this will vary depending on the type. Rotors usually need to be replaced by 70,000 miles. Your brake pad’s indicators will start squealing when the pad is getting low, so squealing brakes tells you it’s time for a replacement.

2. Battery

The red positive terminal is marked with a (+) while the black negative terminal is marked with a (-) symbol. The battery is responsible for starting your car and running its electrical systems, such as the lights, radio, and power windows. Keep your battery in good condition by not using power when your car is not on, such as leaving the headlights or radio on. Batteries usually last four to five years.

3. Radiator

The radiator sits underneath the hood and is responsible for cooling your engine. Air is blown over the radiator, where the coolant brings down its temperature, and it can then cool down the engine. The coolant should always be filled with a mixture of 50% coolant and 50% water. It will also need to be flushed and refilled annually.
