Like all batteries, the one in your car has a set life span. However, it may fall short of its full potential if you have a few wasteful habits. Use the guide below to find out how you can get the most out of your car battery.

Habits That Will Drain Your Battery Prematurely

1. Excessive Use of Electric Features

If it runs off electricity, it’s draining your battery. This doesn’t just mean your car starter and fuel pump. It also means your amenities, including lights, wipers, heating/cooling systems, sound systems, seat warmers, and vacuums. Remember to turn off your lights when the engine is off, and double check that nothing is still on before exiting the vehicle. You should also be careful about the devices you plug into your car — accessories like phone chargers, GPS systems, and food/drink warmers also run off the battery.

2. Driving Only Short Distances

car batteryYou can’t help but use up your car battery life when you’re driving, but some trips use more than others. When you drive only short distances, your battery is never able to reach a full charge. Acidic stratification takes hold. This sees an uneven electrolyte concentration, which essentially means the upper end of your battery is starved, putting it at higher risk of corrosion. It’s best to go for a lengthier trip every couple of weeks if possible.

3. Driving in Extreme Temperatures

Sometimes you can’t help driving when it’s either very hot (above 100 degrees Fahrenheit) or very cold (below 10 degrees Fahrenheit). Unfortunately, that doesn’t change the impact it has on your car battery. Driving in these temperatures can cause lead sulfate crystals to build up. This impedes chemical-to-electric conversion processes, draining the battery of its power. In extreme temperatures, only drive out if you absolutely have to.
