When summer rolls around, it’s easy to forget about your residential oil tank. Though many homeowners rely on oil heating systems, they rarely use them during the warmer months. However, it helps to know how the summer heat can affect your tank and what steps to take to ensure your tank is ready for the fall and winter.

Heat Isn’t the Only Threat

The summer doesn’t just bring heat. It brings humidity, and this can affect your residential oil tank more than you may realize. Humid conditions lead to condensation, which turns water vapor in the air into liquid. This accumulated moisture can compromise the structural integrity of your tank.

How Can Condensation Harm Your Tank?

Rust on the outside of your tank is an obvious sign of problems. However, more serious issues may exist within the tank. Once vapor condenses into water, it can sink to the bottom of your tank, since water is heavier than oil. As a result, rust can accumulate near the base — which is arguably the least ideal area for a problem like this. As water gathers in the tank, the chance of bacteria and other microorganisms increases. This can clog your burner nozzle and hoses, effectively putting your unit at risk for overheating and failure the next time you use it.

How Can You Protect Your Tank?

During the summer, your home heating system is likely the last thing you’re thinking about. However, you should always be aware of its condition. Keep your residential oil tank as full as you can, so there’s less room for water buildup. You should also make sure there’s proper ventilation around the unit. If it’s indoors, and your home’s cooling system doesn’t reach it, try opening windows or placing a standalone cooling unit in the same room.
