Guest bedrooms are one of the most popular home additions. Not only do they allow families to make the most of every visit with out-of-town relatives, but they can also serve another purpose, like that of an office, gym, or craft room, when unoccupied. To ensure your guest room is as welcoming—and multifunctional—as possible, keep the following do’s and don’ts in mind when designing and decorating it.

Do:

Include a large closet.

Spacious closets are often overlooked in guest rooms because people don’t require long-term storage when they're traveling. Chances are your guests will want to hang at least a few articles of clothing, though. When you’re not hosting anyone, the closet can serve as additional storage for the whole family.

Consider color carefully.

The guest room should serve as a haven where visitors can retire after a long trip. As such, it’s important to choose soothing colors that will promote relaxation. Avoid bolder palettes like reds and purples and opt instead for neutrals like beige. You can always include a pop of color with the curtains and bedding.

Don’t:

Neglect the lighting.

home additionsIf you can include an expansive window that will let in lots of natural light, you should; however, don’t neglect artificial lighting in the process. After all, your guests are going to need it once the sun goes down. For total convenience—and a comforting ambiance—wire the room for multiple lamps. This will allow you to place one on each nightstand and one near the entrance.

Forget to give it some character.

Depending on when the property was originally built, certain home additions can feel somewhat separate from the rest of the house. While guests should have their own space, they shouldn’t feel as though they’re staying at an airport hotel away from the rest of the family. Try to give the room some character that’s consistent with the rest of the home. Including artwork and little touches like your favorite travel snacks will let guests know they're at your house and not someone else’s.
