Kitchens come in all shapes and sizes, but there are some common layouts that have been found to maximize function. As you approach your kitchen remodeling project, think about your available square footage and your goals from your new kitchen. This will help you determine which of the most popular layouts is right for you.

Popular Kitchen Remodeling Floorplans

1. Galley

The galley shape features two long counter tops down either side of the kitchen, with a walkway between the two. This is ideal for long and narrow spaces where you want to maximize your countertop space. They can feel claustrophobic, so plan to only have one cook at a time and open up the space by having the wall on one side open to a living area, rather than having walls on both sides.

2. L-Shape

kitchen remodelingThe L-shape describes the layout of countertops in this type of kitchen since two perpendicular counters meet in a corner. This layout is ideal for small to medium sized kitchens. They keep the kitchen more open and prevent it from becoming a walkway for through traffic. Add an island in the middle of the L to maximize on space and keep each “leg” of the L shorter than 13 feet.

3. Horseshoe

The horseshoe, also known as the U-shape, has three walls of counters and cabinetry that form a U-shape. It is open on one side to the living area or dining room. This is ideal for larger kitchens since it provides the space needed for multiple cooks while giving you a lot of storage. If you want to keep your floor plan more open, add a peninsula for the third “leg” of the U.
