Though fluoride plays an important role in dental care, many parents don’t fully understand it. If you’re unfamiliar with the mineral, find out why your child should take full advantage of it.

Fluoride FAQ

What is fluoride?

Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in the Earth’s crust, though it can also be created synthetically. Because it fortifies teeth and combats cavities, it’s an essential ingredient in countless dental care products.

How does it protect teeth?

dental-care-pedodontic-associates-incCavities and other dental health issues occur as oral bacteria wear down tooth enamel. Once the bacteria break through the enamel, they can degrade bone and infect the tooth and gums. Fluoride naturally strengthens enamel. When your child consumes foods, drinks, or products with fluoride, it coats their teeth. Working with calcium, phosphates, and other minerals, fluoride remineralizes enamel to make it more effective at fending off decay.

Is it safe?

There’s a common misconception that fluoride isn’t safe for children’s teeth. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Dental Association, American Medical Association, and many other scientific organizations all support fluoride use, and countless studies show there is no evidence of adverse effects.

Where can your child get fluoride?

Many dental care products contain ample amounts of fluoride, and some bottled waters are also infused with the mineral. The best source is at the pediatric dentist.
