Gum disease is a serious oral health condition, and it can lead to extensive infection, bone recession and tooth loss. Prevention is key for a beautiful smile, and there are many simple changes you can make to keep your mouth healthy. Here are a few tips to follow so that you won’t require an oral surgeon to reverse the effects of a smile damaged by gum disease.

Gum Disease Prevention Tips

1. Brush & Floss Every Day

Brushing and flossing are the foundation of dental care and the only way to prevent gum disease. Gum disease first manifests as gingivitis. As plaque builds up along and below the gum line, it’ll gradually harden to tartar and create pockets between your teeth and gums. Decay-causing bacteria can then attack the sensitive tooth roots and spread infection throughout the gums. Brushing and flossing remove plaque from the gum line and should be done at least twice a day.

2. Quit Smoking

While an oral surgeon can replace missing teeth with dental implants, they won’t be as effective as your natural teeth. To quit, call the Tobacco Quit Line or opt for nicotine patches.

3. Watch What You Eat

Diet plays an integral role in gum disease prevention.  Diabetics may be more susceptible to gum disease. Sugary and acidic foods fuel bacteria and plaque buildup.   When possible, swap them for calcium-rich dairy products, like Greek yogurt and milk, which will fortify your teeth’s protective enamel. Strengthen your teeth by eating fruits, like apples, which are loaded with phosphates and vitamin D, or nuts, which contain ample fiber, folic acid, and minerals.

Unfortunately there is no cure for gum disease.  However if you develop gum disease it is important maintain excellent oral hygiene and you may need to have additional cleanings by your dentist.  This can help slow the progression of the disease.
