Direct tooth bonding is a process in which a dentist applies a composite resin to the imperfections in a tooth as a means of creating a fuller, brighter, more uniform smile. Bonding is a cost-effective alternative to dental crowns and veneers and, with proper care, can last for up to ten years or more. Below is an introduction to this common procedure.

Benefits

The main benefit of bonding is that it restores the size, shape, color, and texture of a damaged tooth. It can conceal decay and discoloration, fill in chips and cracks, and close gaps between the teeth. It produces a natural-looking result and is extremely versatile; at any point in the future, you could have the bonding removed and replaced with a crown or veneer.

The Process

dentistBonding is a four-step process that only takes around an hour. First, the dentist chooses a composite resin in the same or similar shade as your natural tooth so it blends in seamlessly. Second, the dentist lightly etches the surface of the tooth to be bonded before applying an adhesive liquid that helps the bonding stay in place. Third, the bonding is attached to the tooth, shaped to fit it, and hardened with a special high-powered light. Finally, the dentist further shapes the tooth, trimming and polishing it to ensure a smooth surface and a size that fits with the rest of the mouth.

Aftercare

Though bonding is strong and durable, there are a few ways you can help preserve and extend its life span. Refrain from habitually chewing fingernails, ice, pens and pencils, and other hard items since this can weaken the hold the bonding has on the tooth. Brush and floss at least twice daily and see a dentist every six months for a teeth cleaning, as bonding can sometimes be prone to staining.
