Recycling a junk car is an excellent way to be an environmentally responsible driver while making a little money. It also frees up room in your garage or yard and makes for a more aesthetically pleasing property. Before you send your vehicle to the recycling center, there are some steps you should take to make the process efficient. Here’s how to prepare for a junk car pickup or drop off.

What to Do Before Recycling Your Car

1. Collect Personal Belongings

Cars are convenient places to store items like coffee cups, spare change, GPS devices, maps, CDs, phone chargers, and extra clothing. These also tend to fall under and between seats. While your car doesn't need to be spotless when you drop it off at the recycling center, you should clear it of your possessions to ensure you aren’t leaving behind anything of value.

2. Have Your Title on Hand

When you scrap an old car, you are essentially transferring ownership of the vehicle to the recycling center. You will need to hand over your title when surrendering the unit. If you can't find this document, visit the local DMV and request a copy. In some states, if you’ve lost your title, you may be able to complete a transfer form instead. Ask your local scrap yard or auto recycler.

3. Cancel your insurance

Don’t forget to cancel your auto insurance after giving up your car so you don’t pay unnecessary premiums.
