Healthy hearing is important to communication, safety, and enjoyment of life. However, hearing can deteriorate with age or as a result of trauma. This is why hearing assessments are an important part of a comprehensive healthcare regimen. Here’s what you need to know.

How Often Do You Need Hearing Assessments?

The Association of Independent Hearing Healthcare Professionals recommends scheduling your first hearing check as early as 18 years of age. Children and teens who have a genetic predisposition to hearing loss or other risk factors may need to be checked sooner. Most people between the ages of 18 and 45 should see an audiologist at least once every three to five years. If you’re between the ages of 45 and 60, have a hearing assessment at least once every three years. Individuals 60 years or older should have their hearing checked every two years. These are general guidelines, but the frequency with which you have hearing assessments will depend on your health and risk factors.

Why Do You Need Them?

hearing-assessmentMany factors can affect your hearing, such as over-exposure to high levels of sound, which can occur while attending loud concerts without hearing protection or listening through headphones at high volumes. Doing so can damage your eardrum permanently. The damage may not be immediately apparent, which is why it’s essential to continue getting checks throughout life. Age-related hearing loss is also a concern, and it’s why you should get more frequent checks as you get older. If you work in a particularly loud environment, (for instance, if you work around firearms, detonation equipment, or amplifiers) you may need to get checked more frequently because of the increased risk. Hearing aid wearers should also get tested yearly to monitor effectiveness. Getting preemptive checks, even if you’re in good health, is the best way to prevent problems. If damage has been done, your audiologist can also help you manage symptoms and prevent the condition from worsening.
