With summer heat rapidly approaching, it’s more important than ever to check that your heating and cooling system is working properly. You won’t want to turn it on for the first time to find it doesn’t work. Some simple preparation work will ensure your system runs smoothly and reliable when you need it most in the warm months ahead.

A Guide to Summer Prep for Heating & Cooling Systems

1. Check the Thermostat

If it is outdated, the time to replace it is now. Get a programmable or smart thermostat for the most convenient and energy-efficient usage. Give your thermostat fresh batteries, check that it turns on properly, and make sure it has the right settings in it. For example, you’ll want to switch it from “heat” to “cool” and check that the time is correct.

2. Check the Air Vents

Move anything that would block the airflow; this is generally anything within six inches of the vent or directly in front of the vent in the direction the air is released. Dust off the vent so all that dust won’t be kicked up when you turn on the system.

3. Schedule a Service

During a service, an HVAC technician will clean, inspect, and test the unit. If there is anything wrong with the system, they’ll find it and handle the repairs. This tackles any small issues before they become a major problem that causes your cooling to break down on a hot day.
