Many people prioritize boiler repairs and maintenance in the fall, right before the cold weather comes. However, maintaining your boiler for dormancy in the summer is just as important. Even though you aren’t using it, it’s essential that you continue to take care of it and make sure it stays in excellent working condition for next year. Here are four key steps to take.

3 Ways to Prepare Your Boiler for Summer

1. Turn It Off

There’s no need to have gas running into your boiler when you’re not using it. To turn off the gas, look for the valve on the gas line. If you have an older boiler with a pilot light, this will turn off the pilot light as well. If you have an electric ignition system on your boiler, shutting off the gas will stop the ignition system from coming on as the water in the tank starts to lose heat.

2. Schedule an Inspection

A professional inspection will make sure your boiler is working as efficiently as possible and spot issues that could require major heating system repairs if left unaddressed. A regular yearly inspection can save you a great deal of money on boiler repairs and maintenance.

3. Clean Your Boiler

A boiler can collect dust and grime, which can lead to major repairs down the line. Built-up dirt can affect the air quality in your house and create a fire hazard when you turn it back on in the fall. After turning off the boiler, try to vacuum around the unit as much as you can. Wipe off the boiler’s exterior and do a visual inspection for any deteriorating or damaged parts.
