Noticing that your gas gauge is dangerously close to empty with no gas station in sight can be distressing. Although auto towing can come to the rescue if you get stranded, there are a few steps you can take to keep your car running until the next town. If you start getting close to empty, consider these tips.

What to Do If You’re About to Run Out of Gas

1. Pull Over & Find a Gas Station

First, pull over. You’ll want to find out where the nearest gas station is. You can use your phone’s GPS or a state travel guide to locate the nearest one. You should also look up phone numbers for a local auto towing service in case you do run out of gas. If you’re going to be driving through an area with limited cell phone service, it’s best to have this information on hand ahead of time so you’re prepared.

2. Slow Down

The average car is the most fuel-efficient between 35 and 45 mph, so stay in that range whenever possible. Interstate speed limits may vary, so be aware of the lowest possible speeds to ensure you’re sticking to traffic rules and keeping other motorists safe.

3. Turn Off Features

Your A/C system puts extra stress on your engine, so turn it off to conserve fuel. Roll up your windows to reduce air resistance, and turn off your stereo so you’re using as few electronics as possible. The electronics system places strain on your car’s alternator, in turn, requiring your engine to work harder and use more fuel. Never, however, turn off lights if you’re driving at night, as you significantly increase the likelihood of a collision.
