A driver depends on their brakes to help control their vehicle and bring it safely to a stop with a tap of the pedal. It can be easy to take one's brakes for granted, but staying on top of routine maintenance and remaining attuned to possible brake pad issues can prevent the likelihood of an accident and make the vehicle more reliable. Here are a few signs that you might need new brake pads.

How to Tell if You Need New Brake Pads

1. Squealing or Scraping Sound

If you hear a squealing or scraping sound when you hit the brakes, the pads likely need to be replaced. Most modern vehicles have indicators built into the pads that will produce that telltale noise once they have worn down to a particular point. Don't ignore the squealing or scraping, and get in the habit of turning down the radio and regularly keeping your ears open for any unusual sounds.

2. Slowed Stop Times

brakesBrakes aren't really designed to be applied over a significant distance without the car coming to a stop. When this action is repeated day in and day out, like in heavy-traffic commutes, it can wear away the brake pads, resulting in noticeably slower stop times. Instead of the car immediately stopping when you hit the pedal, it will instead roll to a stop. When this issue is present, it may be time for new pads.

3. Clicking Noise

Squealing and scraping aren't the only noises a faulty brake pad can emit. Clicking is also an indicator that new pads are needed. Many types of brake pads are held in place by clips, and if one gets loosened because of damage or wear to a surrounding mechanism, the pad can rattle against it. This most often will produce a clicking noise whenever the brake is applied.
