The way you drive will naturally affect your vehicle. You might even be inadvertently harming your transmission. To avoid premature transmission repair, learn about some of the common detrimental habits to avoid.

3 Transmission-Harming Habits to Avoid

1. Shifting Gears While in Motion

If you’re in a rush, you might shift your car into drive as you’re backing out without coming to a complete stop. If you do this often, you’ll need transmission repair sooner than you’d like. Some people carry this habit over from using a manual gearbox, but if you do it on an automatic, you risk wearing down the gear teeth of your transmission.

2. Towing Beyond Your Vehicle’s Capabilities

transmission repairIt’s easy to strap up a cart, trailer, or boat without a second thought. However, if you tow beyond your vehicle’s capacity, you might damage it. Since the transmission adapts engine power to get the right amount of power to wheels, towing heavy loads makes it work harder, which can lead to overheating and failure. If your cargo’s load is cutting it close to the vehicle’s weight capacity, don’t tow for long distances if possible.

3. Downshifting to Slow Down

In a vehicle with a manual transmission, you’ll need to downshift the gear to slow down whether you’re on a flat road or going downhill; however, with an automatic transmission, you only have to press the brake. If you downshift to decelerate with an automatic transmission, you’ll wear down its gears. Using the brake instead doesn’t involve the transmission at all, so you avoid overworking it.
