From gravel and pavers to concrete and asphalt driveways, there are plenty of surface materials that can make for an attractive, practical, and reliable path to and from your home and garage. However, various materials offer different benefits and drawbacks. To help decide which is best for you, here are some do’s and don'ts to bear in mind.

Do:

Think about maintenance.

A driveway is not something you want to replace frequently, so a certain amount of upkeep will be necessary. Gravel can easily become dispersed with regular vehicle pressure and inclement weather conditions, making a mess to clean up. Concrete and asphalt driveways require much less effort in the way of maintenance. Typically, seal coating every few years and routine crack and hole repairs are sufficient.

Consider the climate.

There is a direct connection between the climate and the durability of driveway materials. Asphalt driveways are naturally resistant to frost heaves, salt, and chemical de-icing solutions — all of which can damage concrete. Gravel can make it difficult to shovel snow. Pavers, like asphalt, tend to be sturdy and reliable and can withstand temperature fluctuations.

Don't:

Forget about appearance.asphalt driveways

You want a driveway that is both functional and attractive. Gravel is rustic and simple. Asphalt is sleek and black, matching well with virtually any design or color scheme. Concrete is naturally gray but can be finished with different colors or textures. Pavers come in a wide array of sizes, styles, and colors.

Overlook curing time.

If you want to start using your new driveway relatively soon, consider how long the material will take to harden. Concrete can take seven days or more to set. Asphalt only needs about a day to cure. Gravel and pavers can be used immediately after installation.
