Homeowners are naturally concerned about the safety of their homes. They place locks on their doors and alarms around their properties. They have high-quality garage doors installed for optimal security. But safety issues can arise within the home—many homeowners overlook what’s in the garage. Here’s a closer look at what you should and shouldn’t store in this space.

Do:

Keep a fire extinguisher handy.

The garage holds a different climate and a different range of items than the interior of your home does, so a dedicated fire extinguisher is recommended. Mount an extinguisher in an easy-to-reach place away from the garage door and foot traffic, then teach your family how to properly use it.

Store tools securely off the floor.

Install a hanging rack designed to hold rakes, spades, and the like well above the floor. A sturdy shelf is recommended for heavier power equipment, such as a leaf blower. Avoid situating tools too high, though—at eye level of the person who most frequently uses them is ideal.

Don’t:

Store dangerous or flammable materials in the garage.

Propane tanks should always be stored away from the home in an area with plenty of ventilation. In small amounts, gasoline is safe to store in the space—but be sure to use approved containers, keep it off the floor and away from towels and rags, and teach children not to go near it. Store dangerous chemicals out of the reach of kids as well, and pay attention to expiration dates so you can dispose of them when they’re no longer good.

Block walkways.

Also, avoid storing boxes or materials near stairs or close to your garage door. This keeps walkways clear to avoid injuries. If you have extension cords or other tools near walkways, find a less-traveled place in the garage for storage and keep them bundled and safely put away to prevent trips and falls.
