It’s a common misconception that vinyl siding requires no maintenance. While vinyl siding is a popular choice due to its low cost and aesthetic, it does require a bit of care to keep it looking like new. Fortunately, this care requires little more than some light cleaning and preventive maintenance. If you’re considering vinyl siding for your home, here’s a quick look at the simple upkeep do’s and don’ts this siding requires.

Do:

Clean it carefully.

Clean away dust and dirt that will inevitably accumulate on your vinyl once a year. It doesn’t take long and prevents the grime from adhering to it causing a grimy look that will need to be scrubbed away. Spray your home down with a garden house from top to bottom to avoid streaks. If your home has grime that won’t simply rinse off, use a soft bristle brush or cloth with soapy water.

Inspect routinely.

SidingVinyl siding is impervious to most of the issues wood may have in that it won’t rot or wear, there are still a few things to watch out for. Every once in a while, walk around your home to look for anything that may expose the foundation wall underneath, such as stains, punctures, or broken pieces. If your siding has detached from the surface underneath, it can allow mold to form and facilitate wood rot in the foundation wall. Contact a siding professional if you notice any issues that may require repairs or replacement.

Don’t:

Power wash without all the facts.

While it’s possible (and very convenient) to use a power washer to clean vinyl siding, there are a few things you need to know before doing so. Not all vinyl siding can hold up to power washing, so you’ll want to make sure your vinyl siding is strong enough before giving it a power wash. Some vinyl siding will have limitations on the amount of pressure. When using a pressure washer, be sure to hold it at eye level. Aiming the water upward at the siding may cause the siding to come loose.

Use abrasives or harsh cleaners.

Though vinyl siding is fairly durable, it isn’t indestructible. Harsh chemicals and cleaners such as bleach, acetone, and organic solvents can fade it, and coarse bristle brushes can scratch it.
