Gestational diabetes is a (usually) temporary form of diabetes that develops during pregnancy. If left untreated, this condition can cause complications for both the mother and baby, but it can be managed with help from your physician. If you’re pregnant or trying to become pregnant, here’s what you should know about gestational diabetes.

Risk Factors

Unfortunately, researchers have not been able to pinpoint any precise causes of gestational diabetes. They have identified several risk factors, though. Pregnant women are more likely to develop gestational diabetes if they are over 25, have prediabetes, have a family history of type 2 diabetes, or are overweight. Although the reasons are unknown, women who are black, Hispanic, Asian, or American Indian are also at a higher risk of developing the condition.

Signs & Symptoms

If you’re expecting, stay on top of all prenatal appointments, as it’s easy to mistake some of the symptoms of gestational diabetes as side effects of pregnancy. For example, fatigue, nausea, and frequent urination are all common symptoms. Other signs of the condition include excessive thirstiness, blurred vision, and sugar in your urine, which can be determined by your physician.

Preventing Complications

physicianIf left unchecked, gestational diabetes can affect the health of the baby. Potential complications include a high birth weight, premature delivery, low blood sugar, and type 2 diabetes later in life. Gestational diabetes also increases the risk of preeclampsia. With the right treatment approach, though, you can prevent such complications during your pregnancy. Some of the most effective ways to manage the condition include monitoring your blood sugar, eating a healthy diet, getting in some gentle exercise, taking insulin injections, and monitoring your baby with help from your doctor.
