While attending elementary school every day is a milestone in your child’s life that marks their ongoing journey toward independence, they still need your support. Getting involved in their school activities in the following ways will show them how invested you are in their education and development.

3 Ways to Participate in Your Child’s School Life

1. Orientation

Schools will often host orientation events at the beginning of the semester to get parents acquainted with the teacher and classroom. This event is particularly essential to attend if your child is new to the school. You can explore the campus together to help your child find their bearings. Plus, you want to meet their teacher and learn what the school year has in store for your child. You can also use this opportunity to meet other parents to start building a support system and community for your family.

2. Field Trip

elementary schoolElementary school is often the time with the most field trips included in the curriculum when the study load is the lightest and the kids benefit the most from hands-on learning. With so many students to keep track of, teachers are always looking for parents to help chaperone the trip. If you step up, you’ll do your child’s teacher a favor and hopefully get to know them better. You’ll also get to see how your child interacts with their teacher and peers in an educational environment while making memories with them.

3. Join a Parent Volunteer Organization

Many schools have organizations that provide opportunities for parents to volunteer, such as the Parent-Teacher Association. By joining these organizations, you will become part of a group of families who are dedicated to both their child’s learning and improving their school community. It’s a great way to show your child that you are invested in their education, while providing opportunities to teach them about community service and the importance of caring for their school and their teachers. At Hawaii Baptist Academy, parents are invited to participate in the Parent-Teacher Fellowship. In addition to raising funds for the school, the PTF provides free resources on parenting and education, such as workshops and films. They also support annual grade level fellowships where families can become acquainted.
