The brakes are one of the key safety systems of your automobile. When you slam your foot on the pedal, you expect the car to stop. However, that cannot happen if your brake fluid is low or ineffective. Below is an introduction to brake fluid: what it is, what it does, and when you should change it.

What Is Brake Fluid?

Brake fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid used to transfer and amplify the compressive force you exert on the brake pedal. The force travels through a system of tubes and becomes pressure that clamps your brake pads against the brake rotor and slows your car. Most modern brake fluid is comprised of either glycol-ether, mineral oil, or silicone, depending on the manufacturer.

Why Should You Change the Brake Fluid?

If there is a small leak somewhere in the system, either at a junction or somewhere along the brake line, the fluid level can eventually decrease enough that the hydraulic system loses effectiveness. It takes a great deal of pressure to stop a moving vehicle, and low brake fluid levels can make stopping difficult or impossible.

brakesFurthermore, brake fluid can go bad. It is notorious for absorbing moisture out of the air. This lowers its boiling point, contributes to corrosion in your brake lines, and contributes to a spongey, non-responsive feeling when you depress the brake pedal.

When Should You Change the Brake Fluid?

The change schedule varies by the type of vehicle, the type of driving you do, and the environment. Brake fluid in hot, humid climates does not last as long as fluid in drier, milder environments. In general, you should have it checked at every oil change and plan to replace it every four or five years.

When you check it, inspect it for a burnt odor, a dark, opaque—rather than translucent—consistency and low fluid levels. If you spot any of these factors, it's time to change the fluid. Also, if you notice it takes longer to stop your vehicle or if you must press the pedal harder or more deeply than usual, have the fluid checked.
