Whether they’re primarily decorative and part of the landscape design or you’re growing herbs and vegetables, garden beds are a fantastic feature to have on your property. However, keeping them healthy can be laborious, especially if you’re new to gardening. With so many different plant species, it can all seem overwhelming. Thankfully, there are a few methods you can try to ensure your garden beds look great all summer long.

How to Care for Your Garden Beds

1. Choose the Appropriate Plants

Plants native to the area are the easiest to maintain. As beautiful as some flowers may be, if they’re unfit for your hardiness zone, you’re going to have a difficult time keeping them in bloom. If you have something particular in mind but unsure which plants will fit your vision, consult a landscape design company. They’ll help you find a similar looking plant, tree, or flower that is better suited to the region.

2. Create Space

landscape designIf it’s your first time growing a garden bed, allowing your plants to grow in size and number is not ideal. Unfortunately, overcrowding ultimately restricts growth as it creates competition for sunlight, water, and nutrients. It also prevents air circulation and makes it easy for fungi to grow. Not only is the extra space better for the plants’ overall growth, but it’s also visually better in terms of landscape design.

3. Go Easy on the Fertilizer

When using store-bought fertilizer, follow the directions carefully. Too much can burn the plants and shock the soil. When in doubt, apply less. The only exception to this is plant-based compost; although it’s nutrient-rich, the concentrations aren’t as high as they are in fertilizer. Even if you apply a little too much, your plants will be safe.
