Funerals are somber occasions that require traditional etiquette, such as dressing appropriately. Proper dress shows respect for the deceased and support for the grieving family. It is also a reflection of the seriousness of the occasion. Follow the simple etiquette guidelines given below to be confident that you’ve chosen the right attire.

Appropriate Attire for Funerals

1. For All Mourners

Mourners, by tradition, wear black to funerals. While wearing black may still be considered an absolute in some cultures, in the United States, clothing in other dark colors—dark gray or a navy blue—is also acceptable. When possible, stick with solid colors and avoid overly showy prints or any pieces with words on them.

2. For Women

Skirts, dresses, or pants are suitable choices for women. All clothing choices, however, should be conservative in style. Avoid mini-skirts and low-cut or sleeveless blouses or tops. Wear flats or pumps, not sandals or sneakers, and leave the stilettos at home. Keep accessories, hairstyles, and makeup simple.

3. For Menfunerals

Dress pants, dress shirts, and ties are ideal. Conservatively appointed suits are recommended for pallbearers and close family members of the deceased. Otherwise, wear dark trousers with a long-sleeved white shirt, a black belt, a subdued tie, and dark dress shoes and socks.
