Navigating life with a toddler can be tough. One minute, they’re on their best behavior as they play with toys; the next, they’re throwing a tantrum on the kitchen floor. Fortunately, you’re not the only one struggling to keep a child calm and collected. There are several methods used in preschool programs to promote positive behavior, and you can practice these at home.

How to Encourage Young Children to Behave Well

1. Be Specific

Whether you’re praising your child’s good behavior or criticizing the bad, describe exactly what they did well or poorly in terms they can understand. For example, saying, “Thank you for sharing your cookie. That was a very nice thing for you to do,” more effectively encourages that action in the future than merely saying, “Good job!”

2. Listen to Them

Then, repeat your conclusion back to them to make sure you’re on the same page. Making them feel heard and understood will help them come straight to you with their next problem instead of having a meltdown.

3. Explain What’s Happening

When a child isn’t listening during class at a preschool program, they may not get to participate in recess for a day. If they don’t comprehend why they missed out, they may be sad about not getting to play, but they’ll likely repeat the bad behavior. For this reason, a child needs to understand that consequences are tied to their actions—whether they’re being punished or rewarded.
