Wood and vinyl are two of the most popular materials for fences since they are both functional and visually appealing. So how do you decide between a wood fence and a vinyl fence? Know the qualities of each material so you can make an educated decision on which is right for you.

Wood vs. Vinyl Fence

Durability

vinyl fenceWood typically lasts around 20 years. As parts of the fence rot or deteriorate, you can change out those sections for new pieces of wood to keep the fence in good condition for decades. The fence will last much longer if it is properly maintained with treatment and painting.

A vinyl fence, on the other hand, is extremely durable. It can stay beautiful through years of weathering, is pest-resistant, will not decay or grow fungus. It will not warp or suffer from termites as wood might.

Maintenance

The lumber in a wood fence will need to be treated and repainted on occasion since paint serves as a barrier to protect it from water, insects, and weathering. Most people do this every two years. Vinyl requires much less maintenance; it can be hosed off occasionally to clean off any dirt buildup, but that’s all that’s required. It will never need to be treated or painted.

Aesthetics

Because you’ll be repainting your fence, changing its color is easy should you wish to change the look. People tend to love the appearance of wood since it weathers beautifully and has a natural look that artificial materials cannot replicate. However, vinyl can be designed to mimic the look of wood and comes in a wide variety of colors and styles, so you may find that it can work for you as well. Both materials would make an effective privacy fence that will enhance your home’s aesthetic appeal.
