Eye Care Do's & Don'ts When Going to the Beach or Pool, Anchorage, Alaska

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie who loves water skiing or you prefer to swim laps in the pool, it’s important to protect your eyes while doing so. When participating in any kind of water sport or walking along the beach—proper eye care is important. Thankfully, protecting your vision all summer long is fairly easy, whether you’re on vacation or at a local lake; just keep the following do’s and don’ts in mind.

Do:

Wear sunglasses.

Sunglasses are the ultimate beach accessory because they not only look stylish but also protect your vision, especially when the sun’s rays bounce off the water. Wearing sunglasses that block UV rays can reduce the risk of all kinds of conditions, including cataracts, macular degeneration, and pterygium. Whenever you’re not in the water, don your shades for optimal protection.

Put on goggles.

visionWhether you’re swimming at a pool, lake, or beach, wear goggles. Neither chlorine nor salt can kill 100% of microorganisms. If they get into your eyes, it can result in a serious infection, such as conjunctivitis or keratitis.

Don’t:

Swim with contacts.

Before diving in the water, take out your contacts. Even with goggles on, water can seep through the seams and get into your eyes. If you're wearing lenses, harmful microorganisms are much more likely to stick around and cause complications. Contact lenses are essentially magnets for dust and bacteria, so ditch them before swimming.

Rub your eyes.

If sand, dirt, and debris get into your eyes, don’t rub them. This could end up scratching the cornea. Instead, flush it with a saline solution and visit an eye doctor. If you try to remove the particle on your own, you could end up doing more harm than good.

If you need a quality pair of prescription sunglasses before heading to a beach this summer, turn to Northern Lights Eye Care.
