For most of us, driving is an everyday occurrence—so even if we know the risks, it is easy for us to become complacent. And while auto insurance can protect you from the full financial ramifications of an accident, it can’t prevent injuries—or worse—from occurring. Therefore, stay alert, especially if you deal with any of the following.

Reasons Your Attention May Stray From Driving

1. Familiar Roads

Especially during the work week, people tend to drive the same route every day. However, don’t let the familiar landmarks make you feel overly comfortable. A recent study has shown that people tend to pay less attention in areas they already know well, slowing their reaction times in case of a problem or impending accident.

2. Rubbernecking

People’s habit of looking at other accidents or breakdowns on the side of the road is referred to as rubbernecking. While it’s natural to be curious, taking your eyes off the road is dangerous—and could result in your own collision and call to the auto insurance company. While you should be aware of what is happening on the sidelines in order to give any accidents some berth, make sure your attention remains on what is in front of you.

3. Pets in the Car

However, if they are unrestrained, they can crawl into your lap, their leash may become tangled in the steering wheel, or their mere presence could draw your attention. Therefore, if you have to transport your pet somewhere, keep them in a pet carrier or use a pet seat belt or barrier to secure them in the back of the vehicle.

4. Food & Drink

While it’s not strictly prohibited by law, consuming food and beverages while driving can be problematic. For starters, looking over to grab your food out of the seat or drink from the cup holder can make it difficult to stay in your lane and respond quickly to obstacles. Also, if you spill your food or drink, the distraction it causes is equally as bad as you try to clean it up.
