Outdoor barbecues, gardening, and beautiful, warm weather all make your time at home during the summer more enjoyable. Unfortunately, however, these factors, along with the intense heat, increase your risk of needing emergency fire damage services. Enjoy this time of year without the worry of incurring home damage by following these do's and don'ts of fire safety.

Do:

Clear dry vegetation away from your home.

Remove all dry and dead plants, weeds, brush, and wood from your home’s perimeter, deck, gutters, and roof. Dry vegetation is combustible and a common cause of fire damage. You should have at least 30 feet of clearance to protect against possible fire outbreaks.

Keep the grill away from the siding.

To avoid melting your siding or accidentally starting a fire, keep this appliance at least three feet away from your home. Also, whether you are using propane or charcoal for cooking, make sure to place the grill in an open, well-ventilated area to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning, as both fuels produce noxious fumes. Make sure the grill is completely cool before leaving unattended.

Don't:

Mow dry grass.

emergency fire damageThe metal blades under a lawn mower can create sparks if pushed or driven over unseen rocks, causing dry vegetation to go up in flames. To avoid this, only mow after rainfall or on humid days. If you need to mow dry grass and it hasn’t rained, water it first.

Don’t leave a bonfire unattended.

If you like to spend your nights sitting around an open bonfire, never build it near structures, including fences, trees, shrubberies, or any overhangs or coverings. Keep a couple of water buckets and a shovel nearby to quickly extinguish spreading flames, if necessary. Additionally, never leave the fire while it is roaring because small escaping embers can quickly become a hazard, leading to a need for emergency fire damage services.
