A water well provides you with a private water supply when you aren’t connected to municipal systems. This will allow you to control the water quality you’re receiving. When your pump or plumbing malfunctions, however, it may let outside contaminants into your liquid. Understanding some of the signs of contamination will ensure you know when to schedule a quality test. To help you get the best water possible, here are some signs that there may be particles in your supply.

Water Quality Red Flags

1. Sputtering Faucets

Sputtering signals that there are pockets of air inside your plumbing. It’s not uncommon for this to happen occasionally, but if you notice this on a regular basis, the plumbing or valves in the well pump may be damaged. This will allow contaminants from the soil to enter your water supply.

water well2. Strange Odors

Your water should be odorless. If it smells like rotten eggs, it may contain sulfur. While not harmful, this is unpleasant and may drive you to drink less water. Installing a water filter will trap this element to improve the flavor of your supply.

3. Cloudy Water

If your water is properly softened and filtered, it should look clear. Cloudiness and foam in your water could indicate the presence of bacteria or other elements. Have a water test done to determine whether this is caused by harmless minerals or bacteria. Depending on the results, you may need to clean your filter or install a new one.

4. Unusual Taste

Pure water should have no strong taste. Any strange flavors, such as fishiness, saltiness, bitterness, oiliness, or a metallic tang may mean that there’s an extra component in your water. There are hundreds of contaminants that could be at fault, including zinc, iron, manganese, and copper.
