Whether it’s been in the family for decades or you found it while antiquing, a vintage wall clock is a charming piece to have in any home. It fits a variety of interior decorating styles and is always a great conversation starter. However, because of its age and the complexity of its parts, dedicated maintenance is critical. If you want to keep it running smoothly, here’s what you must do.

How to Keep Your Vintage Wall Clock in Good Condition

1. Keep the Temperature Steady

Never position your vintage wall clock near a radiator, fireplace, or anywhere it would receive direct sunlight. The dramatic temperature fluctuations can lead to humidity, which will affect the internal mechanisms and alter the accuracy of the timekeeping.

2. Be Gentle When Cleaning

vintage wall clockLint-free cloths and soft brushes are the best tools for cleaning the exterior. You don’t need metal polishes; the silvered finish commonly used in vintage wall clocks will come off if you use it. For glass smudges, dampen the cloth and use a small amount of mild detergent. For the wood, a little bit of solid finishing wax goes a long way; avoid spray polishes, especially the ones made from silicone. They can easily get inside the clock and affect the internal mechanism.

3. Wind Weekly

If you have an 8-day clock, it should be wound once a week, on the same day. Although you should always be gentle when handling it, don’t be afraid to fully wind your clock. You can’t overwind it; once it’s fully wound, you won't be able to turn further.

4. Let the Professionals Oil the Mechanism

Vintage wall clocks need to be lubricated about every 3-5 years. The exact number will depend on the age and condition of your clock, but whatever the case may be, leave it to professional repair shops. Aside from the proper equipment and products, they also have steady, practiced hands that will get the job done correctly.

5. Invest in Full Service Every Decade

In addition to having it oiled, you’ll need to have it fully serviced every 10 years. Just like a car, air conditioner, or heater, there are many moving parts that require skilled hands to repair or replace. A vintage wall clock's longevity depends on routine, thorough inspections, and tuneups.
