A natural part of any job search is going to interviews. It’s normal to feel nervous, no matter how many times you’ve done it. While there’s no way to eliminate interview anxiety, check the list below for tips to prepare fully and reduce the job-interview jitters.

How to Reduce Nerves in Preparation for a Job Interview

1. Give Yourself Plenty of Time

When you get called for an interview, celebrate; this is a big step in the job search. Then, get organized. Find out where the interview will be held and research the best routes and parking beforehand. On the day, give yourself plenty of time to arrive, find parking, use the restroom, and freshen up. It’s better to be early and have time to walk around the block than to be rushed and anxious from being late.

2. Wear Clothes That Make You Feel Goodjob search

Wear clothing that is appropriate to the setting and your desired position. If your interview outfit is now too small or feels dated, invest in something new that feels good, fits well, and makes you feel confident. Wear shoes that are in nice condition and comfortable. Not sure what to pick? Check out the company website for clues, ask the employment agency, or play it safe with business-casual attire.

3. Practice

If you’ve embarked on a job search before, you’ll have an idea of the types of questions employers ask. “What are your strengths and weaknesses?” or “Describe your last position and responsibilities” are common examples. Find sample interview questions online for the type of job you’re interviewing for. Research the company to get a feel of recent projects, the company vibe, and the language they use to describe themselves and their industry. Then, ask a friend or family member to help you practice answering questions. The idea isn’t to memorize answers but to get a feel for the content of your response.

4. Avoid Eating Smelly Foods

Lunch before the job interview shouldn’t include a garlic-laden pasta sauce or a hoagie with mountains of raw onions. Not only will you likely have bad breath, but you’ll also be self-conscious about it. Likewise, don’t eat foods that make you gassy, and skip the triple espresso that will only make jitters worse.

5. Be Yourself

Remember that the person interviewing you is a human, too, and they want you to succeed. Be professional, but be yourself. People hire people they like, even if they might not have all the qualifications. Interviewing is a balance of selling your skills and being confident and comfortable.
