Hardwood floors provide a beautiful, durable surface for your home. However, normal wear and tear can cause their appearance to decline over time. Thankfully, you don’t need to entirely replace your hardwood floor to get it to look like new again. With floor refinishing, you can undo the years to enjoy beautiful flooring. Here’s how the process unfolds.

3 Key Steps in the Floor Refinishing Process

1. Emptying the Room

To refinish the floor, the surface must be clear of any obstructions. All decorations and furniture will need to be moved to another room so the hardwood floor can be sanded and refinished. Some floor refinishing providers can provide assistance moving furniture or other bulky objects when needed, but this will delay the completion of the work.

2. Sanding

While workers try to keep dust to a minimum, you should take the precaution of covering furniture in adjacent rooms with sheets so particles don’t settle on them. You may also wish to close air vents in the room to keep dust from entering the HVAC ducts.

3. Staining

After sanding is complete, a new stain will be applied to the wood to provide a protective layer against water, scratches, and other hazards. Many different colors are available to match your design preferences. Flooring contractors will typically test the stain before applying it to the entire floor to ensure it looks the way you want. Multiple stain applications and a topcoat will complete the refinishing process.
