When dealing with pest control issues, you may be unfamiliar with some of the different bees that can inhabit your property. Honey and carpenter bees are both fairly common but can differ significantly when it comes to prevention and pest control methods. If you’re finding swarms of carpenter bees in or around your home, consider educating yourself about this species and the best preventative procedures you can follow.

What Are Carpenter Bees?

If you’ve ever noticed large, mainly black bees flying around your home or porch, you may be dealing with a carpenter bee pest control issue. While these bees look similar to your typical fuzzy bumblebee, they have mostly shiny, hairless abdomens and tend to hover around unweathered wood. Carpenter bees drill holes in this wood to develop the nests they rear their young in. They prefer untreated wood varieties like redwood, cedar, cypress, and pine to nest in.

Where Are Carpenter Bees Found Around the Home?

pest controlWhile carpenter bees are typically more docile than other types of this species, they can still be a nuisance due to the different locations you may find them around your home or yard. These bees look for softwood for their nests, which means you may find them in your porch, older trees around your home, or even old would furniture you have outside. Carpenter bees do not typically invade the inside of your home unless they have built their nest into your porch or wood around your roof and have reached an attic.

What Happens if You Get an Infestation?

The most common sign of an infestation of carpenter bees is the appearance of circular holes in the wood surrounding your home. While painting and staining the wood can be a good deterrent, if you have an infestation you may notice them burrowing into this as well. To prevent carpenter bees from entering your home, seal any cracks or holes in the foundation or would with a silicone-based caulk product and repair any screens with holes in them. If the bees are still a persistent problem, you can also hire a pest service for various control options, such as spraying your property.
