4 Safety Tips for Pediatric Nurses, Suffern, New York

Being a pediatric nurse is highly rewarding. However, the profession is not without its risks, especially when you’re tasked with providing home care. Along with affording the best possible care to the children you’re working with, you must also take the right steps to preserve your safety.

How Pediatric Nurses Can Stay Safe When Providing Home Care

1. Be Cautious Around Pets

While pets can bring a lot of joy into a patient’s life, they can be unpredictable with new people. When possible, try to avoid interacting with pets, even if they appear friendly. You can also request that all pets be put away while you’re providing care.

2. Steer Clear of Stress & Strain Injuries

Pediatric NursesBeing a pediatric nurse often involves bodily stress and strain. You can take steps to prevent injuries, such as by maintaining proper posture and avoiding awkward positions. For example, when lifting a heavy object use your knees as opposed to bending over from your back.

3. Watch for Home Hazards

Working with patients in their homes provides a dynamic work environment. Unfortunately, it also means that you’ll be faced with potentially hazardous situations. Watch out for clutter, which poses a falling hazard if you’re not careful. Falls can also be caused by slippery floors, which may be an issue after cleaning. Try to remain aware of your surroundings at all times.

4. Stay in Contact With the Client

Caring for a sick child can cause stress on a family, and in some instances, this stress may lead to confrontations. If you feel threatened, don’t hesitate to contact the authorities. Also, work to diffuse the situation when possible. Offer explanations in a calm, even voice and refrain from arguing.
