After spending the winter months dealing with dry eyes due to arid air and indoor heating, summertime can be a relief for contact lens wearers. This time of year presents its own potential eye problems, however. Here are three ways you can maintain comfort and clear vision all season long.

Summertime Tips for Contact Lenses

1. Use Goggles When Swimming

If you go for a dip to cool off, wear goggles to keep water out of your eyes. This keeps lenses from coming into contact with chlorine in swimming pools, salt in the ocean, or dirt in lakes. These substances can cling to the lens and cause irritation, infection, and other eye problems.

2. Wear a Hat & Sunglasses

Exposure to UV rays is also associated with an increased risk of eye problems such as age-related macular degeneration and cataracts. While you can opt for contact lenses with UV protection, these don’t protect the entire eye. Wear sunglasses and a hat that provides additional shade from the sun.

3. Prepare for Air Travel

Your eyes have a thin film over them that allows contact lenses to smoothly mold to the surface. When your eyes get dry, the edges of the lenses aren’t able to sit as seamlessly, irritating and possibly scratching the cornea. If you’re planning a summer getaway that requires flying, bring artificial tears in your carryon to make up for the dry plane air.
