With summer here, it’s time to start planning some family excursions. Whether you’re planning a day at the beach or a week on Kauai, though, it’s important to take certain precautions for your ocular health. Here are a few essential eye care tips to keep in mind before embarking on any summer adventures.

3 Summer Eye Care Best Practices

1. Always Wear Goggles

Virtually all bodies of water, including chlorinated pools, contain microorganisms with the potential to cause serious eye infections. That’s why you should always put on swim goggles before diving underwater. Additionally, those who wear contacts should remove their lenses before swimming because they can trap harmful bacteria.

A pair of sunglasses will provide a considerable amount of protection, but even wraparound frames can let some UV rays in. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat as well will shade your entire face to block harmful rays where the sunglasses don’t.

3. Don’t Skip the Eye Protection

Dozens of summer activities and chores require you to wear eye protection. Whether you’re mowing the lawn, power-washing the house, or painting a shed, your eyes are exposed to flying debris, harsh chemicals, and other hazards. Therefore, it’s essential to don appropriate eye protection before getting started.

In addition to following the above tips, schedule an eye exam this summer to check your ocular health. For quality eye care for the whole family, turn to Nelson O. Yoshioka Jr., O.D. Since 1998, the practice has helped Oahu residents see clearly while protecting their overall eye health. Plus, they sell a vast selection of designer frames. To make an appointment at their Honolulu office, call (808) 734-7050. To see Cheryl C. Niitani, O.D., at their Pearl City location, call (808) 455-3333.
