Whether a transformer blows or a storm tears down an electric line, there are a number of reasons you might experience a power outage at home. In the summer, this risk becomes all the more troubling once you realize your family could be without air conditioning. Even when the power comes back on, how will you reset your HVAC system? To prepare for a potential summer outage, consult the following informative guide.

What to Do to Get Your HVAC Up & Running After a Blackout

Once the power comes back on, you may be eager to cool down your living space. However, the first step to a cooler house is shutting off the system so you can reset the tripped circuit breaker. To do this, locate the metal breaker box usually found in your garage, laundry room, or basement. Open the box and find the switch marked “HVAC” or “air conditioner.” If it isn’t marked, just look for a switch in the neutral position. Finally, move this switch to “off” and then “on.”

To prevent damage to your air conditioning system, you’ll need to wait about a half an hour for its internal circuit breaker to reset. Once those 30 minutes are up, switch your thermostat to “cool” to start enjoying its hard work once again.

When to Call for Professional Help

hvacIn some cases, this reset process may not be successful. If your air conditioner didn’t come back on after flipping the breaker switch and waiting for a half hour, there may be an issue with the air conditioner’s power supply. Or perhaps your air conditioner turned on for a few minutes, only for the switch to trip again. In either case, call an air conditioning repair team to get to the root of the problem. Electrical repairs can be dangerous for non-professionals; therefore, you should stay away from trying any other troubleshooting methods other than the one mentioned above.
