If you’ve been out in the sun too long, your skin will become sore and irritated for a few days or more, depending on the severity. Fortunately, there are several ways to help with the discomfort and speed the healing. Try these tips for at-home skin care when you’re experiencing a sunburn.

Sunburn Skin Care Remedies

1. Drink Lots of Water

skin care60% of your body is water, and when you’ve been exposed to excessive sunlight and heat, you’ll be more dehydrated than usual. To replenish your water and help your body heal, drink plenty of hydrating fluids throughout the days following your sunburn.

2. Cool Off

A lot of the discomfort comes from the heat that the area generates. Cool the affected skin with a moist towel and cold shower or bath to reduce the pain and inflammation. For a little extra healing power, add a cup of finely ground oatmeal to your bathwater as it acts as an anti-inflammatory.

3. Apply Aloe

Aloe vera is a desert plant that’s used in many skin care lotions and healing ointments because of its naturally soothing properties. Apply an aloe gel to sunburns to promote healing, and use a gel formulated with hydrocortisone for extra pain relief.

4. Use an Anti-Inflammatory

Over-the-counter medications, like ibuprofen or aspirin, can temporarily relieve pain and inflammation from a sunburn. Follow the directions on the packaging so that you take a safe, effective dosage.
