Strabismus—or crossed eyes—is a condition that causes the eyes to be misaligned. While it’s often diagnosed at a young age, it’s possible to develop this condition when you’re older. Here are the answers to a few of the most common eye care questions that individuals have about strabismus.

What You Need to Know About Strabismus

What is strabismus?

Strabismus is a condition that’s identified by the eye moving in an inward or outward direction. The misalignment can occur constantly or randomly and can affect one or both of the eyes. There are many types of strabismus, depending on the direction that the eye tends to move.

What causes it?

eye careThe muscles attached to the eyes receive signals from the brain that point them in the direction to move. However, poor muscle control or eyesight could cause the eye to misread the signal and move in other directions, such as in, out, up, or down.

What are the symptoms?

Strabismus is easily identified when the eyes don’t move in the same direction. Children with this condition might squint when looking at something in sunlight or tilt their heads to focus on an object. Bumping into objects could also be a problem due to their impaired depth perception.

What are the treatment options?

When caught early, whether during childhood or as soon as it develops, this condition can be treated with eye patches, eyeglasses, drops, or customized vision therapy. If strabismus causes other issues, such as double vision, an eye care specialist may recommend surgery as treatment.
